Prevention
The best way to prevent cholera is to maintain good hygiene. Even though this may seem like a simple task in the USA, where almost everyone has clean homes and proper sanitation, many second- and third- world countries are too poor for these conveniences. In Haiti, many people that have lost their homes after the 2010 earthquake have gathered together in small villages where the waste washes into the river, which people then drink from. To prevent cholera in places where hygiene is not easy to come by, follow these easy tips:
- Boil all water to kill the bacteria inside. Some safe drinks include unopened bottled water and soda.
- One should also cook all food to kill the bacteria on it.
- Another way to prevent cholera is to avoid eating raw foods, especially those which came from the water. Some examples are oysters, clams, and even raw vegetables.
- Do not under any circumstances swim in polluted water.
