Treatment
This is a man being treated for cholera.
Since cholera victims die from dehydration, to treat cholera, one must treat the dehydration. An oral solution made up of salt, sugar, and water is used to treat milder cases of cholera. For more severe cases, and intravenous solution may be given. Adults are given the antibiotic tetracycline to prevent fluid loss, and shorten the span of the disease. However, this is only used in very severe cases. It is also not used very often, so the bacterium does not develop an immunity against it. Tetracycline is not given to children because it discolors teeth. Patients are also instructed to drink water a lot. Recovery usually take three to six days.
